Quality Lab Technician – Sunbury Plant, PA

Job Overview:

The Shift QC Lab Tech position is a non-union salaried (exempt) position as part of the plant management team and will work as part of a QC laboratory team and additionally be able to work independently to perform all quality control laboratory functions at the Sunbury plant. The plant runs multiple shifts and occasionally overtime including weekend shifts. The assigned normal work hours will be based on supporting production shift schedules. As part of the lab team, the QC Lab Tech is willing to cover other shifts as needed for vacation and production overtime coverage.

Roles & Responsibilities:       

  • Safely performs Laboratory tests according to prescribed standards to determine chemical and physical characteristics or composition of solid, liquid or gaseous materials and substances for purposes such as quality control, process control, product development, or determining conformity to specifications.
  • Sets up, adjusts and operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as analytical balance, electronic balances, Ro-tap sieve shaker, volt-ohm meter, muffle oven, agitators, moisture meter, viscometer, sulfur analyzer and other equipment as instructed by immediate supervisor.
  • Accurately tests materials such as anthracite coal, petroleum coke, metallurgical coke, and graphite for such qualities as ash content, particle size, uniformity, density, carbon content, sulfur content, moisture, electrical resistance, volatile matter and pH determination.
  • Accurately tests samples of manufactured products to verify conformity to specifications.  Required to collect samples from plant facilities and prepare samples through any necessary steps such as drying, grinding, splitting, or micro milling.
  • May prepare graphs and charts for all phases of SPC and Statistical computer reporting or assist in periodic update of laboratory procedures. The position requires knowledge of Windows Based systems.
  • Records test results on a computer for daily report of findings.
  • Must be able to calculate basic mathematical computations.
  • Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment and surrounding areas.
  • Reviews daily production results to ensure product quality is being met.
  • Assures all material produced is sampled and tested as required by quality procedures. Assures material to be shipped meets established specification requirements, reconciling any discrepancies. Assures nonconforming material is identified and properly labeled, communicated, and isolated.
  • Various other jobs may be assigned by the Quality Manager.
  • Provide prompt feedback to the production department about products being produced or raw materials that have been received.
  • Standard work schedule is 8 hours. May be assigned additional hours, including Saturdays or Sundays as determined by the Quality Manager.  Additional working hours may be required if needed to satisfy the testing requirements.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision in an environment with constant change and minimal supervision.

Preferred Experience/skills:
  • Previous laboratory experience, which may include medical, chemical, biological or industrial lab work.
  • Experience with the use of personal computers. Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.

Physical requirements

  • Ability to be on your feet for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must use proper tools as required by the task
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical
